Default Man Vs. Food

This show is on the Travel Channel (I think). I was channel surfing a few weekends ago and caught a few episodes.

This guy goes around to various restaurants with wacky foods or stuff with huge portions and tries to eat it all in one sitting.

In this one episode he went to an ice cream place in San Francisco (The Creamery, I believe) and they have something called a "Kitchen Sink Sundae". This things is 2 gallons of ice cream, 8 scoops of whipped cream and a bunch of toppings. It was meant to be a party sundae but then they offered it up to a person who could finish it in 45 minutes and if the person finishes they get free ice cream for a year or life or something like that. This guy finished the entire thing. I was getting sick just watching him.

They really need to rename this show "Guy on a Journey to a Heart Attack".

I REALLY love ice cream, but just reading about that made me feel queasy. I don't get the Travel Channel, and at this point I'm not wishing for it!

It's kind of an interesting show in a "travelling circus curiosity, freak-show" kind of way...

He does find some interesting food places. But watching him eat some of that stuff (and the portion sizes) is like "ewwwwww!!"

Yeah...on the ice cream thing, I'd have been done after 5 bites.

I remember when i was about 8, my cousin married a preacher who was dour, mean spirited and i was afraid of him but he was visiting one time and I almost changed my mind about him when he offered to take me to the drug store soda fountain and buy me some ice cream. I ordered one scoop of vanilla in a dish. It was really all I wanted. I was not a big eater and really really did not care too much for sweets.

He would have none of it and insisted i get a banana split with three kinds of ice cream on a whole banana and topped with syrups, nuts, whipped cream etc. I protested that I did not want, could not eat it. He ordered it for me anyway, then got mad at me when I truly could not eat more than a few bites. That was 57 years ago and the memory is still clear.

My partner and I really enjoy the show.

It is not just huge portions that the host hunts down, he has also run a team food triathalon and had challenged Salvador Molly’s in Portland, Oregon where he attempts to win the Great Balls of Fire Challenge – taking down 5 habanero fritters with habanero salsa.

All in all, it is entertaining and he hits some interesting spots.

I watch the show sometimes and wonder how he can eat what he does. They started the new season recently and maybe it's my imagination....but he seems to have put on a few pounds. Looks like the food is winning

I just can't eat as much as i used to (no problem back then putting away a 2-pound steak with all the trimmings!), but I enjoy the show. No, not watching him gorge down all those massive loads of (or impossibly spicy) food, but for seeing the other stuff available in whatever city he is visiting. There are some really good meals out there and I often search out recipes for them on the internet to try them out at home!

Wiley, I agree. He does seem to find some unique and interesting restaurants.

I find the show similar to a car wreck; you can't help but look. My DH and I groan and moan wvapors wer eith delighted horror when the show is on. I am hoping he never has a reversal of fortune on the air, that would ruin it for me. Did you see him sweating through that Indian curry with over 10 types of hot chiles in it. The cooks had to wear gas masks the vapors were so caustic.

The Travel Channel ran a marathon of this show all day yesterday. I taped all the ones I hadn't seen. I'm still watching them.

I just saw the one with the hot curry. Anything that required a gas mask to cook, I'd have to think twice about eating. LOL.

The burger from that baseball stadium in Illinois (with the Krispy Kreme donut for a bun) looks oddly revolting and good all at the same time.

Sounds almost like "the Zoo" or Pig Trough" from Farrel's. Fun place, great corned beef sandwiches and giant dill pickles.
