Premium Plymouth Gin (82.4 proof)
Smooth, herbacious, light, Winston Churchill's favorite. Since 1793. In WW2 Churchill could get no vermouth, so ledgend has it, he would bow to France and pour Plymouth for his martini. Jane & I celebrated our 20th anniversary tonight. A dry Plymouth martini and a wonderful Rioja (01) with steaks.
Plymouth gin is so good--the 10+% decrease in alcohol (most premium gins are 94+ proof) really makes a difference. You can have a martini or a gin and tonic, or a gin gimlet without going face down in the pasta. By the way, proof is interpreted as 50% of alcohol content--82 proof is 41% alcohol, 94 proof is 47% alcohol--I love Tanqueray, but Plymouth--OMG--best of both worlds!!
If you drink gin try it.

Happy Anniversary!
I heard that Winston Churchill described the perfect dry martini as "drinking a glass of gin while looking at a bottle of vermouth"

Happy Anniversary Bill & Jane!! Martini, Rioja and a steak - Roy would be so envious. Well, come to think of it, no reason he can't have the same darn thing tomorrow night - it's his b'day and he's already gotten his T Bones for his 'special' dinner. AND his favorite - twice baked potatoes with everything in the frig mixed in!!

Thank you Jean--happy birthday Roy--glad I could influence the menu!!
Norm, my info is he quit using Vermouth when France was occupied--may just have been his excuse!! Never the less he was quite an imbiber--once at a party Lady Astor saw him and said "Winston, you're drunk" --he responded, "Bessie, you may be right, but you're ugly, and tomorrow I'll be sober".
I've always wanted to use that line--on a few certain people.

To which Lady Astor replied, "if you were my husband, I'd poison you" to which he answered "If you were my wife, I'd take it"

Classic! I am not a big gin fan, but I tell you what- on a hot summer evening after a long day, little is as refreshing to me as a gin and tonic...lime twist of course. And I prefer Canada Dry tonic. SOO out of character, but hey...keep 'em guessing. Bartenders know NOT to presume- I have gotten many free that way ;{)

Re: Premium Plymouth Gin (82.4 proof)
I made Jane a gin gimlet using Plymouth--she said it was wonderful! A gimlet uses a Tbs of Roses Sweetened Lime Juice instead of vermouth as in a martini. She likes pickled onions with it (I don't know why). I like the gimlet--she drinks it after dinner while I have my stinger on the rocks.

A friend of mine drinks nothing but Bombay Blue. I know it's a gin. At least that's whats she orders and seems to VERY much enjoy. I've never even tasted gin in my life. I've been a scotch drinker when I do dip into the joy joice. What's your opinion of whatever this Bombay blue thing is compared to what your drinking? Anyway, sounds like we could have one heck of a good party!

My other gin is Tanqueray--92 proof--I love it in in Gin and tonic. What you are speaking of is actually Bombay Saffire by lable--never had it but it is described as having 10 flavors including almonds, licorice as well as juniper- it is either 86 0r 92 proof--great reputation. I like the Plymouth for its lower alcohol content (82 proof) predominately juniper flavors with misc herbs and very smooth. Burns just right going down in a martini!!

Re: Premium Plymouth Gin (82.4 proof)
James Bond is famous for his vodka martini but in the first book by Ian Flemming, this was his martini. It is called a Vesper.
James Bond Martini
3oz Gordon's gin
1oz vodka
1/2 oz (Kina Lillet), now called Lillet blanc, a which is similar to vermouth.
Shake all ingredients well in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice; serve in chilled martini glass. Deep champagne glass.
